Abortion Wars

Welcome to the abortion wars, where anti-abortion zealots and politicians demonize (and terrorize) women and their doctors with never-ending bans, restrictions, and threats.

Here’s where we are so far:

GOP having ‘full-blown freak out’ after being punished in elections this week

Story by Brad Reed, in Raw Story

“Republicans handily lost this week’s big Wisconsin Supreme Court election, as Justice Janet Protasiewicz defeated Republican-backed rival Dan Kelly by 11 points – a surprisingly severe defeat in what is traditionally a swing state.”

An Idaho College Removes Artwork About Abortion, Citing a State Law

By Brian Boucher – “Artwork about abortion is, historically speaking, vanishingly rare. And the future display of such work seems dimmer after a small public college in Idaho removed six works about abortion and birth control from an exhibition, citing a state anti-abortion law.”

“One of the artworks removed was “Medical Abortion Pills,” by Katrina Majkut (2015).”

Finally, as we wrote in a previous issue of the Matrix Gazette:

“Most women and their spouses are happy with a pregnancy. They want to have a child. It should be a joyous occasion.

“Yet not every pregnancy is planned. Not every woman is ready to bring a child into the world.

“So, here’s a warning: If you’re a woman or girl of child-bearing age in America, think twice before getting pregnant in Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, or Wisconsin!

“If you do, your life will suddenly belong to the state. You will not be free to choose whether to bring a child into the world or not. That decision is made for you by state politicians, courts, and law enforcement.

“You effectively become a child-bearer for the state.

“You have no choice but to stay pregnant… or go to jail.

“But if you’re happy being pregnant, whatever you do, don’t have complications during your pregnancy.

“Your doctors will not be free to offer informed decisions for fear of breaking the laws, losing their license, and going to jail.”

A final thought: The Republican Party has allowed itself to become the Anti-Abortion Party. If it wants to regain lost momentum and relevance, it needs to refocus on limited government, fiscal responsibility, and… freedom! Tamp down the anti-abortion zealotry.
