China Censors Covid Info, Hinders Efforts to Understand Virus

Getting information out of China is difficult, with much covered up and hidden.

A critical data-sharing study by US and Chinese scientists was withdrawn under government pressure, creating uncertainty about early Covid cases.

China’s censorship campaign extends to international journals and scientific databases, undermining shared scientific knowledge. Chinese scientists withheld data, removed genetic sequences, and altered journal submissions under government pressure.

The most troublesome news is that Western journal editors have enabled these efforts by agreeing to changes or retracting papers for unclear reasons. Organizations such as the World Health Organization have relied on confusing data and inaccurate timelines as a result.
